Some of the hottest noir and dark fiction authors in the country join local authors for the popular series
On Thursday, August 13, the bar at 106 Main in downtown Durham will host seven noir authors from across the country as they read, mingle, and sign books during the Bull City's third Noir at the Bar fiction event.
"Noir at the Bar" is a nationwide movement popularized in St. Louis by Scott Phillips and Peckerwood author Jedidiah Ayres for independent crime authors to gather, meet, and read their work. Bars across America have hosted past events that showcase both new and experienced writers.
This is Durham's third Noir at the Bar. This installment will feature writers Steve Weddle (Country Hardball), Greg Barth (Selena), Eryk Pruitt (Dirtbags, Hashtag), S.A. Cosby (The Brotherhood of the Blade), David Terrenoire (Beneath a Panamanian Moon), Eric Beetner (Rumrunners), and Geraud Staton, a local visual artist who recently finished his first novel, Beyond Darkness.
"The last two Noirs at the Bar have been such a blast and had great turnouts," said Hashtag author Eryk Pruitt, who also wrote the award-winning, local short film "Foodie" in 2012. "Eric Beetner wrote me up to say he'd be in town (from Los Angeles, where he edits The Amazing Race for CBS and hosts the LA chapter of Noir at the Bar) and asked if we'd be interested in holding another. The opportunity to get to introduce Durham to some of these writers and vice-versa is amazing."
The event starts at 6:30 and is expected to end around 9:30. Folks are free to purchase books on-site or bring their own for autographs. Some authors will be giving away prizes as rewards for winning NC-themed crime trivia with a Bull City twist. People are encouraged to drop in for a drink and listen to a reading or two before deciding if they would like to hear more about the author's work.
"These events are a great way for indie writers to get to meet the community, and for the community to find something new to read," says Pruitt. "And it's in a bar, which makes it all the more accessible. No Jane Eyre readings in a bar, if you know what I mean."
